Pay first or pay after eating? (2 real-life Taiwanese Mandarin expression)

โ€œ่ฆๅ…ˆ็ตๅธณๅ—Ž?โ€ and โ€œๅƒๅฎŒๅ†ไป˜ๅฐฑๅฅฝโ€ theyโ€™re real-life Taiwanese Mandarin expressions, but for some reason, theyโ€™re not taught in textbooks. :( I guess thatโ€™s part of the reason why many learners struggle to understand Taiwanese clerks.

ไฝ ่ฆบๅพ—ๅ‘ข?

What do you think?

I often get asked this by my course students,

and I'm surprised that many learners tend to pronounce ๅ’Œ ใ„ใ„œหŠ hรฉ.

While thatโ€™s understandable, itโ€™s not common in everyday spoken Mandarin, at least not in Taiwan.

A:ใ€Œๅ’Œใ€้€™ๅ€‹้Ÿณ๏ผŒๅฃ่ชžๆˆ‘ๅ€‘้€šๅธธ่ชชใ„ใ„ขห‹

In speaking, we almost always pronounce ๅ’Œ

as ใ„ใ„ขห‹ hร n.

If youโ€™re speaking with Taiwanese locals, friends, or family, just stick with ใ„ใ„ขห‹ hร n.
