Why are Taiwanese fans shout「臺灣尚勇 siōng-ióng 」& Team 挺 Taiwan (Taiwanese Identity & spirit)

我在寫這篇文章的時候,覺得應該早一點教大家這個口號的

While writing this article, I felt that I should have taught everyone this chant earlier.

因為現在在棒球比賽或是現在任何的運動賽事都可以看得到、聽得到臺灣人在大喊「臺灣尚勇」

In baseball games and now in many other sporting events, you can see and hear Taiwanese people shouting “Taiwan the Bravest (臺灣尚勇).”

這句話的背後也有一種只有臺灣人才懂的複雜心情

This sentence also carries a kind of complex feeling that only Taiwanese people can truly understand.

Why this slogan - (臺灣尚勇 Taiwan the Bravest) becomes so popular?

臺灣尚勇 (Táiwān siōng-ióng)
Taiwan the Bravest

小心喔,我們要用臺語來講才比較有味道 :)

Hey, be careful—we should say this in Taiwanese; it sounds more authentic:)

尚勇的臺語發音是 siōng-ióng
The Taiwanese Minnnan pronunciation of 尚勇 is siōng-ióng.

➡️「尚」:「非常、最」。
“尚” means “very” or “the most.”

➡️「勇」:勇敢、勇猛,有胆量,還有衝勁的意思。
“勇” means brave and courageous; it also carries the idea of having guts and drive.

所以,「尚勇」的意思就是「最勇敢的」,用来讚美一個人或一支隊伍的勇氣。
So, “尚勇” means “the bravest,” and it is used to praise the courage of a person or a team.

你也可以說你尚勇,意思就是你非常勇敢、有衝勁。
You can also say someone is 尚勇 siōng-ióng, meaning they are very brave and full of fighting spirit.

為什麼臺灣尚勇紅遍整個臺灣呢
Why did “臺灣尚勇” become popular all over Taiwan?

其實是因為去年臺灣意外拿下棒球12強冠軍,臺灣人的棒球魂又再度被召喚起來。
Actually, it’s because last year Taiwan unexpectedly won the WBSC Premier12 championship, and the baseball spirit of Taiwanese people was awakened again.

臺灣的棒球歷史悠久,可以說是日本人當年在日治時期(1895-1945)教會臺灣人打棒球的。
Baseball has a long history in Taiwan; it can be said that the Japanese taught Taiwanese people how to play baseball during the Japanese colonial period.

但是近幾年臺灣漸漸發展成屬於自己的棒球文化,當然我們還在發展中。
However, in recent years Taiwan has gradually developed its own baseball culture, and of course we are still developing.

雖然我們的棒球不是最強的,但是我們的臺灣精神就是勇敢,所以這個句子深植臺灣人的心。
Although our baseball is not the strongest, the Taiwanese spirit is about courage, so this phrase resonates deeply with Taiwanese people.

如果說有一個運動項目是可以讓臺灣人團結ㄧ心的,那就是棒球了。
If there is one sport that can unite Taiwanese people, it would be baseball.

這句話臺灣尚勇也完全代表臺灣人那種勇敢、想衝的靈魂。
The phrase “臺灣尚勇” also fully represents the brave and determined spirit of Taiwanese people.

幫我們臺灣人找到身份認同
It helps us Taiwanese people finding a bit sense of identity.

可能對很多外國學生來說講有點難理解,但是透過棒球,我們開始一點一滴的找到自己的身份認同。
This may be a bit difficult for many foreign students to understand, but through baseball we have gradually started to find our own sense of identity.

在國際賽事我們一直都是中華隊,在奧運我們也只能被叫做中華隊,非臺灣隊。
In international competitions we have always been called “Chinese Taipei,” and in the Olympics we can only be referred to as that, not Team Taiwan.

我們是沒辦法拿出自己國家國旗的

We can’t show our flags.

但是自從去年的棒球十二強贏得冠軍後,整個奮鬥的過程中,有很多球迷開始自創很多口號來為球員加油。讓我們也開始叫自己 臺灣隊 或是用英文 Team 臺灣。
But since winning the Premier12 championship last year, during the whole journey many fans created their own chants to cheer for the players, and we also started calling ourselves Team Taiwan.

應該是說你可以講中華隊,但是也很多人開始叫自己臺灣隊。老實說以前臺灣人叫自己臺灣隊或是 Team Taiwan 是有點突兀的。
You can still say Chinese Taipei, but many people have started calling the team Team Taiwan. To be honest, in the past it felt a bit unusual for Taiwanese people to call themselves Team Taiwan.

之前還有很多臺灣人在網路吵,我們到底要怎麼稱自己的國家隊,總之現在三種都可以。

Before, many Taiwanese people argued online about what we should call our national team, but now all three are acceptable.

中華隊、臺灣隊、Team Taiwan 三個都通用了。

“Chinese Taipei,” “Team Taiwan,” and “Team Taiwan (in English)” are all commonly used now.

聽到這裡你覺得怎麼樣呢? 我常常在想對外國學生來說,會不會覺得很難理解呢

What do you think after hearing this? I often wonder whether it might be difficult for foreign students to understand.

Team Taiwan =

挺(tǐng ㄊㄧㄥˇ)臺灣?

為什麼在加油的時候我們開始會用 Team Taiwan 呢?
Why do we start to use “Team Taiwan” when cheering?

注意一下這邊有個雙關語,就是有兩個意思。
There is also a pun here with two meanings.

因為 Team 跟挺非常相近,挺就是支持的意思。
Because “Team” sounds very similar to the Chinese word “挺,” which means to support.

例如 我挺你
For example: “I support you.”

所以如果你說 Team Taiwan,那也是挺台灣的意思。
So when you say “Team Taiwan,” it can also mean “support Taiwan.”

以上是我自己在球場上的觀察 。
These are my own observations from being at the stadium.

其實寫這篇的時候,內心真的非常有感觸,覺得一定教你們臺灣尚勇這個口號。
While writing this, I genuinely felt very emotional and thought I must teach you this chant: “臺灣尚勇.”

臺灣的棒球是充滿歷史但也是充滿血淚的,特別是十年前還有棒球簽賭醜聞,讓很多球迷發誓不再看臺灣棒球。
Taiwanese baseball is full of history but also full of painful moments. For example, about ten years ago there was a baseball gambling scandal that made many fans swear they would never watch Taiwanese baseball again.

有的時候我心裡在想,透過棒球賽事,我們臺灣人真的做了很多內心的投射。
Sometimes I feel that through baseball games, Taiwanese people project many of their inner emotions.

透過棒球我們表達了自己想贏、想拼的衝勁,雖然我們目前還不是最厲害的,但是我們知道自己很勇敢,還是想試試看。
Through baseball we express our desire to win and our determination to fight. Even though we are not the strongest yet, we know we are brave and still want to try.

(臺灣島嶼人民的精神 哈哈)

(The spirit of the people of the island of Taiwan, haha.)

特別是透過棒球比賽,能讓世界看到臺灣,這些複雜心情都在加油的時候表露無遺。
Especially through baseball games, the world can see Taiwan, and all these complicated feelings come out when we cheer.

我爸也是棒球迷,從小好像我就看到他內心的糾結的,很奇妙的臺灣文化,對不對。

My dad is also a baseball fan. Ever since I was little, I feel like I could see the inner conflict in his heart. It’s a very peculiar part of Taiwanese culture, don’t you think?

總之,想更了解臺灣棒球可以去看看電影 Kano。很推薦。
In short, if you want to understand Taiwanese baseball more, you can watch the movie Kano. I highly recommend it.

謝謝你們看到這邊。
Thank you for reading until the end.

有時候我覺得我的使命是讓全世界可以看到臺灣,更了解臺灣,認識臺灣文化。
Sometimes I feel that my mission is to help the world see Taiwan, understand Taiwan better, and get to know Taiwanese culture.

我希望可以幫我的學生學臺灣華語,跟臺灣人交朋友、深聊、談心。
I hope to help my students learn Taiwanese Mandarin so they can make friends with Taiwanese people, have deep conversations, and share their thoughts and feelings.
