Did you know that many illustration books are actually written for adults, too?
I want to recommend three Taiwanese picture books that are perfect for winter.
I'll choose two of these books for us to read and discuss in an upcoming picture book workshop.
Also, I hope they’ll bring a little warmth to your heart. ❤️
mā ma, mǎi lǜ dòu
Mommy, Let’s Buy Mung Beans!
This is a heartwarming little story about a mother and her child going to the market to
buy mung beans and then making mung bean soup together.
Why I chose this book
It’s a very simple, easy-to-understand picture book.
A friend actually recommended it to me.
She’s a mom of two, and both she and her kids love this book.
After reading it myself, I found it really heartwarming. It brought back so many memories of growing up in Taiwan.
Mung bean soup is a favorite Taiwanese dessert enjoyed by both kids and adults.
This book is full of that unmistakable Taiwanese feel.
Through the eyes of a Taiwanese child, you get a glimpse into everyday life and culture in Taiwan.
The illustrations are colorful and vibrant, too.
By the time I finished reading, I found myself wanting to go home and have a meal with my family.
Look at the street signs and taiwanese elements in details ⬇️
So cute, isn’t it? I hope to discuss them with you during the workshop.
Level: All levels, especially beginners! (TOCFL novice + TOCFL band A1 above)
There isn’t much text, and the language is very conversational.
The vocabulary is intentionally simple and easy to understand,
making it a great choice if you’re just starting to learn Mandarin.
yí ge bù néng méi yǒu lǐ wù de rì zi
A Day That Can’t Go Without Presents
Can you imagine Christmas without presents?
But do presents really matter that much?
Why I chose this book
The illustrations use more muted colors and cool tones. The main characters are a bear dad, a bear mom, and a little bear.
The little bear seems to be worried about something. As you read, you might feel a little heaviness in your heart.
But by the end of the story, I felt warmed inside.
The Gift of the Magi 💛
It also brought back memories of a book I read as a child: The Gift of the Magi.
By the way, Taiwanese people celebrate Christmas too! It's quite an important holiday for couples and friends. Many people exchange gifts or go out to restaurants to
enjoy a nice meal.
(TOCFL band A and above)
Level: suitable for all levels.
tǔ dì yé ye guò shèng dàn
Grandpa Tudigong Celebrates Christmas
Tudigong, also known as the local guardian deity, is an important figure in Taiwanese folk religion.
Did you know that there are lots of temples dedicated to Tudigong (the Earth God) in Taiwan?
I wonder if you've ever noticed any while walking around or hiking in the mountains
In the book…
Tudigong and Santa Claus are good friends. But the day before Christmas,
they stop talking to each other. It seems like they've had a little falling-out.
Why I chose this book
This story is a wonderful way to learn about Taiwan's unique Tudigong tradition.
I'd never seen Tudigong and Santa Claus brought together in a story like this before,
so I found the idea really fresh and interesting.
I think adults can get a lot out of it, too.
We still have feelings to work through. We still get into arguments with friends.
Level: pre-Intermediate and above. (TOCFL band A2 above)
There's a little more text on each page than in the first two books,
and you'll find lots of useful vocabulary.
which makes this book a great choice for reading together and discussing the story with your students.
Which one are you interested? Which one would you read to your children?
I'll be choosing two of them to read and discuss with students.
歡迎來一起讀 would you like to read together?
PS This is not a sponsor, I simply want to share with you these amazing reading materials
as a teacher.
Q&A
I got a very interesting question yesterday so I'd like to share it with you--
Q1 : Do the Taiwanese 故事書 picture books include pinyin and zhuyin?
What do the inside pages look like?
In Taiwan, we only use zhuyin (bopomofo). Children’s books usually use only zhuyin
alongside the traditional Chinese characters.
The original books don’t include pinyin, but I’ll send you versions with both pinyin and zhuyin,
so you can follow along either way.
This might not be for you, but I wanted to invite you to read and discuss these picture books with me:)
